Module 5 was based on a similar topic as most of the other modules, the development of the economy and society as a whole. The videos of this module began with a video about the early history of IBM, which focused on the early production and development tactics for both IBM’s products and their staff. Following the IBM video was the video titled The Boeing Company – the leader’s history by Skyships Eng, which detailed the history of Boeing from 100 years ago to well past WWII. The third video of this module was titled Economics USA: 21st Century Edition, which focused on the Great Depression and its effects on society. Next was the video titled The 1950’s in America, which detailed an interesting point about how television was being used to say the opinions of the people. The fifth video of Module 5 was titled Montgomery Bus Boycott by Ramon Silva, which narrated the story of Rosa Parks and the bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama. Finally, the last video of this module was titled The 1960’s in America: Crash Course US History #40 by CrashCourse, which was all about the 1960’s and all of its major events.
There was a lot of surprising information in these videos. First off, I had not realized that there were 50 racially motivated bombings in the 1960’s. Schools always taught that there were demonstrations of violence in relation to race, but I had never heard of racially motivated bombings before now. Also, I was surprised to hear that Boeing manufactured boats and furniture when the plane market was on the decline. Finally, I found it interesting that a rigged game show took only a few weeks to make a nobody into the face of the nation. That goes to show how much influence the media has on society.
